The year 1803 marked the beginning of this substantial Portuguese Manor House style colonial residence. With the front fence and gates, made of masonry and wrought iron, positioned right on the edge of the cobble-stoned esplanade, overlooking the Bay of All Saints, ”Casa Sejala” enjoys a privileged beachfront position.

Constructed of rendered stone and brick, with external walls some 40 cm (16 inch) thick, this imposing structure has truly stood the test of time! Substantial arched veranda columns, and the arch-topped timber windows add further to the elegant colonial ambience.

A centrally located circular column of some 8 meters in height supports the large roof –re-tiled with 14´000 new terracotta tiles- and allows the insulated ceilings to follow the roofline to the apex of the house, unimpeded by walls. Thus creating a magical sense of space, and it ensures the coolness of the house in summer.

The elegant and practical floor plan layout is very functional, with the central hallway linking the very generously proportioned accommodation.

Distinctively patterned original Portuguese floor tiles throughout the house attest to the colonial origin of  “Casa Sejala” and provide that “cool underfoot” feel for the tropical climate.

The substantial renovations and restorations include:

  • most walls, inside and out, re-rendered and faced with a “trowel-on” texture finish layer
